Palestinian Artist

The artist who inspired this piece, Sara, is 10 years old and lives in the Al-Tuffah neighbourhood (Arabic: التفاح, literally: "the Apple") which is one of four quarters of the Old City of Gaza.

Before the war, Sara was in third grade and one of the top students in her school. She enjoys public speaking and used to present her school’s announcements.

With school no longer functioning, Sara is taught at home by her mother and she in turn teaches her two younger brothers Mohamed and Omar. Her dream is to some day become a professional teacher.

The piece الأمل, which is Arabic for “Dóchas” (or “Hope” in English) represents Sara’s hope for the future. It features her handwriting and the tablecloth upon which she enjoys learning. Her signature also features.
